Transformation

Ideas for the upcoming metamorphosis animation, pumkin – scarecrow, arcade – gamer, race car – racer, octopus – pirate.

1. Halloween and autumn colors are two things I love to work with, and since it’s October I thought it’d be fun to do something around it for this project. At first it seemed like fun to go from a pumpkin to a witch, until I remembered that was the exact example we had gotten, so I went with a scarecrow. The revision is a spookier version, where the pumpkin looks normal at first, but then straw arms pop out and it bursts open and changes into the scarecrow with an eerie smile!

2. For the second idea I again looked at what I really like to draw and inspires me; the arcade.

I’d start out with an arcade cabinet making 8bit sounds, and a character twirling around on-screen. Then, the cabinet bends over, the top and the console start to change into arm rests as the character pulls himself out. He hangs in the air for a while, turning into the gamer dude on the right, while the cabinet changes into a seat. He falls down into it, the seat and character squash together and then bounce up again, he continues to play with his controller.

3. This was more of a doodle than an actual idea and the one that got worked out the least, a toy race car that turns into a racer. The transition would look somewhat like a summersault, the racer being in a round pose and then “folding out”.

4. A one-eyed octopus to a one-eyed pirate. The tentacles seem really tricky to work out, but this seemed like a fun idea.

I tried to draw something more unexpected but still linked, but eventually turned the octopus into an already-pirate-looking creature, making it a bit less unexpected.
